Farmer’s Market Tips & Tricks

What time of year is it? It’s farmers market season!

Here is how I prepare and shop at the farmers markets.

Research what's in season: If you start out with a basic knowledge of seasonal produce, you’ll know what kind of fruits to expect when you arrive at the farmers market. Keep in mind that the seasonality and availability will differ depending on where you live!

Plan meals: Plan meals or make a list before you go so you have a base idea of what you need to get. Have some room for flexibility because there's always gonna be fun stuff you want to buy or some stuff that is sold out.

Bring cash/change: Don't rely on your credit card. It's becoming more common but some farmers only accept cash so bringing that extra cash might come in handy.

BYOB: Bring your own bags! You are already cutting down on carbon emissions from not mass transporting the produce so you might as well cut down on the plastic as well! They also hold more items so it's a win win situation.

Research for any refill stations: Knowing if your farmers markets have any refillery stations is going to be key so you can bring your own container for those. This can be anything from kombucha to oat milk to hand soap or shampoo! Most of the time you get a discount for turning in or bringing the container!

Talk to the farmers: Farmers love to talk about their produce so ask questions! If you find a fruit or vegetable that is new to you, don't be afraid to ask. Most venders will be happy to tell you how they are grown, their origins, what it tastes like, and how to prepare them. As farmers know all the deets. about their crops, they know the best way to fix them for meals!
